Medieval life simulator: from peasant to king

Updated

In Crown & Plough, a free history life-sim browser game, the Middle Ages (starting in 1200) works as a medieval life simulator. You are usually born to a peasant or craftsman, train in arms or learning, win land through knighthood or a Crossroads of Fate, and build a lordship into a duchy and a kingdom over several generations.

Calls to crusade, the Great Famine of 1315, the Black Death and the peasant revolts that followed arrive in their historical years, and you make your choices in the middle of them.

What happens in 1200s Europe

The medieval era has events of its own: crusade preaching in the marketplace and the debt of a vow, Acre and Damietta, the truth about a relic, the northern crusades, the arrest of the Templars (1307), the Great Famine (1315), two popes and the great free companies. After the Black Death come flagellants, the lie about the wells, thirty days of quarantine, ownerless land and peasant revolts. The Fifth (1217), Seventh (1248) and Eighth (1270) Crusades and Nicopolis (1396) arrive in their real years asking for troops or a crusade tax, and between 1360 and 1400 plague returns several times.

Turning points let you bend the period: What if Constantinople had held against the Fourth Crusade?, What if the Mongols had stayed in Hungary in 1242? and What if Orléans had fallen in 1429? can each go the other way depending on which side you back.

FAQ

Is there a free medieval life simulator?

Yes — Crown & Plough is free and runs in the browser with no download. Pick the Middle Ages (1200) on the title screen and you are born somewhere in Europe that year.

Can a peasant really become king?

Yes. Win land through knighthood or a Crossroads of Fate, then absorb your neighbours: three holdings make a duchy, eight a kingdom and sixteen an empire. It usually takes several generations.

Is the Black Death in it?

Yes, with flagellants, quarantine and peasant revolts afterwards; between 1360 and 1400 plague returns several times and you choose to quarantine, flee to the hills or stay and tend the sick.

Are there other periods?

Eight in all: Classical Greece, the Roman Empire, the Age of Vikings and Coronations, the Middle Ages, the Renaissance, the Baroque, the Age of Revolution and the Victorian era. See history games by era.
